No Bad News 2024/25, Volume II

Happy (almost) new year. I am happy despite looking out into a sea of green where snow used to be. I've been one of those folks toughing out the rain and getting some great snow surface as a reward. If my two-year-old can be all smiles during a 90 minute session in the drizzle, we all have that in us. I've started rooting for snowmaking windows instead of snow. It is less stressful and definitely more productive for skiable base.

One offshoot of local backcountry pursuits is it puts the Caberfae experience in perspective. I'm lucky to get half a dozen days a season in these Harrietta hills where the snowpack warrants earning turns by uphilling. Caberfae, on the other hand, pumps water out of the ground, manicures it with machines every single night for 100 days straight, then hauls my creaky body up to the top in a padded chair.  If that's not enough, all one has to do is fall off the hill into one of three different watering holes, all waiting to offer a cold beer and hot hamburger? When you take a step back and think about what a cool deal that is, snowfall and lift hours gripes start to become an afterthought.

There are lots of fun club events planned for January kicking off with some original live music from Luke Winslow King in the bar this Saturday. It is pretty rare and special to catch Luke without needing a ticket, so bring some friends, members or guests, to the show (and mind the bar policies). The best way to support live music is to be an audience member.

Cadillac Ski Team will soon be cycling through the building in the afternoons and on home meet days. Do congratulate the lady Vikings on another state title last year and long-time head coach and club member, James Netzley, on a successful retirement from teaching math (and re-hirement as head coach again). Many club members, past and present, have skied under James' leadership there.

I'll leave you with a James Netzley quote as he tired of me calling him "Mr. Netzley" a few years ago.... "Sam, call me James.  We might still be X years apart but by ratio I guarantee we are getting closer to 1." How do you argue with that?

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Open House

While everyone who came out last weekend got a little damp the snow conditions were great and the fun at the club was as fabulous as ever. Honeybadger helped fire everyone up with a great set and the kitchen team did their usual best to warm us up on the inside. Thanks to all who participated!
