No Bad News, 2023-24, Volume III
What a season. Green Christmas. January snowpocalypse weekend. Then a month of El Niño clambake. Punxsutawney Phil didn’t even look for his shadow this year. He just ordered a Margarita and sat down under a beach umbrella. That little guy is only right about 30% of the time anyways. Maybe he’s just confused or a contrarian. Seems like seeing a shadow would imply sunny, warm weather, not six more weeks of cold. Changing his stubborn, rodent mind would more than double his accuracy.
The remaining snow on the hill has been combed over so many times by groomers I feel like I know each individual crystal by name. But cold temps are coming and Caberfae is resilient, firing up snowguns even for 4-5 hour snowmaking windows. If they aren’t giving up on winter, neither am I. The alien snow I skied on last Friday evening was some of the best of the year. Maybe I was just glad to be skiing on anything at all.
I’ve been doing a lot of people watching this year and despite the weather curveballs I continue to see all smiles, from the bunny hill to the bar. My neighbor Waddy has always preached that Caberfae is more a state of mind than a place to ski. I’m coming around to that same conclusion. Skiing is part of the recipe, but just one of the ingredients.
So goes our little Club. Family day was full of giggles. Fish fry Fridays and member-organized potlucks are getting more traction. We’ve got some great live music in the bar this Saturday. Sue’s kitchen has been cranking out some killer staples and new food specials. All of this against the backdrop of what initially draws us here – skiing right? Maybe it is the other way around…?
Be sure to vote for board members by tomorrow. Much like global weather patterns, our Club is ever-changing. Good governance is akin to the Super PoleCat snowmakers lining the hills. It will help us make it through the tough, unpredictable times.
In case your mind is also drifting to spring prematurely, I’ll leave you with a classic from Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley, “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” Hang in there and see you in March!
