MARTY MANLEY
As you can see in the two pictures I have been around the Club for many years. I had been a member for 10 years with my parents when the black & white was taken and 30+ in the second. When I brought my family to the Club in the early 90’s I became a board member and didn’t leave the board until 2014. During that time I was Secretary – Treasurer for a number of years, President twice, during one of those years we raised money to put on the new roof and the next year we banned smoking in the Club. During all those years our goal was to grow but be fiscally responsible, it was a successful principle. I believe we still need to continue to be conscious of what we spend.
After I retired from the board I lead a dozen dedicated members to rewrite the By-laws. It was a two-year project that took a lot of compromise, negotiating and most importantly talking things out and working together. I believe I can bring these skills and my historical knowledge to the board. The Club is a very special place that I, and many of you have devoted countless hours to, we have come a long way and I want to ensure we continued to be successful.
I believe there’s plenty of room for improvement but we also have to be sure we stay the same, we’re an amazing Ski Club. Thank you for your vote, I’m looking forward to getting back involved.
Thanks, Marty
CHRIS MEDEMA
Greetings fellow Caberfae Ski Club members!
I’m Chris Medema and I have been skiing at Caberfae since the age of three. Originally from Muskegon, I’ve had the good fortune of being part of the ski club since the early ‘80’s when my family joined. My wife and I returned to Michigan in 2015 after spending ten years in Colorado. Melanie and I now reside in the Grand Rapids area and are also closely involved with a local charitable organization that’s very dear to us. In our free time during the non-winter months, we are often found fly fishing on rivers throughout West and Northern Michigan.
I’ve worked in business operations for the majority of my career and currently serve in a director’s role in the environmental management arena. My primary focus is on commercial property. I have also worked in the IT field in public health and healthcare. My experience across a wide swath of both the private and public sectors has enabled me to appreciate the value of varying viewpoints, understand the importance of gathering consensus, and foster creative problem solving.
My interest in joining the board stems from a desire to uphold cub traditions while encouraging increased involvement among members as the club evolves. I look forward each week to booting up in the round room on Saturday mornings and hope to meet more of you over the coming weeks. It has been exciting to watch the club grow and prosper over the years, and I appreciate your consideration for a position on the board. Caberfae and our unique and special ski club hold a lifetime of wonderful memories for me, with many more to come!
MARK PIKULA
My name is Mark Pikula. My parents, Marlene and Don Pikula, started skiing at Caberfae in 1954. My first memory at the Caberfae Ski Club, was coming into the round room to warm up with hot chocolate after skiing. My wife Karen, sons Donald and Mark became members in 1999. Now my oldest son,Donald, and his family, Catherine, Elliot, Adam and Leo are club members. That makes 4 generations, over 60 years. During that time, I’ve experienced the work and dedication previous generations have given to make the club what it is today.
I truly believe it is the people of the Caberfae Ski Club that make it the place that it is. The building and facilities enable us to have a place where memories are made, while families grow to enjoy this great sport. A place where members want to come, use the facilities, make memories and enjoy the social aspects.
So, here is my commitment to you if you select me as a board member:
Listen to the membership and fellow board members
Think through, review and propose solutions
Continue to work in whatever capacity needed in order to make the club a destination where all want to come and enjoy what this club has to offer
Most of my professional life as an engineering manager with organizations running product design, product development, quality, profit and loss responsibilities as well as personnel development. The last years of my career I was a senior director responsible for program direction and program management. I have experience serving on national engineering committees which these organizational skills can be used as we move forward with our future projects.
While you visit the club you won’t see my handiwork as it is hidden behind the walls and inside the cabinets. I have many hours working with my dad on the plumbing! Now that dad is gone, I continued this year working on remodeling the bathrooms plumbing upstairs.
Having enjoyed the skiing, the facilities, and the friendships for many years, I think you’d agree, ensuring the long-term success of the club is paramount. It doesn’t happen on its own. In order to continue the legacy and growth of the club, I feel called to offer my service as a board member.
